if i made it to africa itself what would i find in terms of buying tribal art and how does it change from country to country?could i get in trouble if i showed an item in one country that i bought in another?

Seems a bit easy-going what you are thinking about. I think you should have some experience in these countries. One thing is going there as a tourist in a nice hotel, but bringing old african tribal art over borders could bring you in trouble.
You need to know a bit of language (French would be good), and how to deal with hungry policemen.
I have seen that not only black people do the trading there, there are a couple of "whites" on their way. But they certainly know how to bribe the right people.
African prisons are not nice places in my opinion, wouldn´t like to see them from inside.

I have dealt with native african traders in france and spain before and I know a little french.Are there any countries I should try first and any I should avoid?

I have heard that south africa is ok if you stay to main streets and avoid certain areas.Ihavent been yet but would like to go
